Piano Flow

· Playing with an old friend ·

Waves of light are floating in the air,
interweaving with my innermost sound,
dreaming and breathing through infinite space.

Droplets of sound are sparkling colours in the night,
interweaving with your innermost sound,
breathing and dreaming through infinite space.

This old piano is with Susanne for more than 30 years. She bought it shortly after arriving in Berlin to study architecture, feeling the loss of her piano at home.

Playing the piano for her is like talking to an old friend, sharing emotions and feelings and giving them a form and perspective.

The manufacture is unknown. It can no longer be tuned 'correctly', but is tuned a semi-tone lower for less tension on the strings. And it has not been tuned in a long time, since after tuning, it loses some of it's mojo and becomes too clean for comfort.

The animation we created in Tooll3, an open-source realtime animation software.
It was quite the journey to find something that does not clash with all the tiny bits and pieces of the internal mechanics of the piano, but interacts in a fluent way with it.

We often work with audio-reactive animation, but in this case it was the other way around: Susanne reacted to the animation while improvising the piece.
