Flower of Life

· A living, breathing sound sculpture ·

First the tendrils go exploring and then the leaves come out.
The forest awakens, a gentle breeze moves the petals.
Life ensues.

Later in life, some of the colour has worn off, things get slower.
Contemplation settles in with thoughts of Zen and Wisdom.
Calm and Measured.

Based on a large horn speaker, this sound sculpture comes to life with a generative realtime animation created in Tooll3 that flows along like a day on the meadows and in the forest, then moves into an old Zen garden with gnarly old bonsai trees...
The soundtrack is created in VCV Rack generatively through pure synthesis for an everchanging ambience of peace.

The Speaker

· Transforming a GDR veteran ·

The horn speaker in the center of this installation is with us for a long time.
We found it many years ago during an evening stroll through the streets of Berlin, where it is customary to put out things one no longer needs on the sidewalk.

We were intrigued by the massive iconic object that at the time still sported it's original, worn, army-green colour and may have originated either from the GDR military or some Eastern Germany sports ground.

We carried it home together and Thomas decided to paint it the way it is now, mostly white with only the four horn-cones in the center black.
Around the front there is a rubber lip that has shrunken over the years as you can see by the small gap. It is there both for protection and to counter resonances.

Other than the looks and large frontal diameter of 70cm may suggest, the sound is rather thin and has no bass at all.
But it does focus medium frequencies very well and therefore is ideal for transmitting voice over a longer distance to a specific area.

It sports four small sound drivers with massive magnets behind the central tubes which each contain another secondary counter-tube. They are all measured to create the constantly increasing diameter of a tripple-folded exponential horn for maximum amplification.
Therefore a standard headphone output is enough to create good volume already.
